The steam-hauled locomotive takes you on a zig-zag journey through curves and loops of the quaint town and passes through multiple wistful stations including Ghum station (2258m) which is India’s highest railway station. Declared a World Heritage site by the UNESCO in 1999, the toy train is a must-see for everyone.

5. Ride the Cable Cars at Darjeeling Ropeway: There’s no other way to fully enjoy the breathtaking view of Darjeeling than on a journey of the ropeway. Offering a bird’s eye view of the entire landscape of the town which is covered in trees, tea gardens and overflowing with rivers, the cable cars are a favourite tourist attraction.

7. Batasia Loop War Memorial: Adorned with beautiful flowers, the Batasia Loop is a popular tourist spot not only known for its 360-degree view of the landscape but also its unique history. The loop was created to counter the sharp descent of the toy train from Ghoom to Darjeeling and is considered to be an engineering feat. In 1995 the war memorial was inaugurated at the centre of the loop, honouring the Gorkha soldiers who lost their lives at various wars after the independence of India.

8. Pray at the Japanese Peace Pagoda: A symbol of unity and peace, the Japanese Peace Pagoda was inaugurated in 1992 to unite people of all races and cultures in their search for world peace. The magnificent white dome structure houses the 4 avatars of Buddha which are painted golden and is a magnificent sight to behold. Spend some time meditating with the soothing chant of Namu Myōhō Renge Kyō. Situated in the Jalapahar hills a few kilometres from the main town, the pagoda can be easily walked to or reached in a car.

9. Visit Religious sites: The Dali monastery or gumba is one of the largest monasteries in Darjeeling and is known to preserve the traditions and cultures of the Tibetan monks. The monastery is a magnificent structure that offers a serene view of its surroundings while the walls on the inside are covered in beautiful paintings. The large golden statues of Lord Buddha and the Gods are a beauty to behold in itself and leaves you in a trance that is heightened by the constant chanting of prayers by the monks.

The Mahakal Temple is perched atop the Observatory Hill and is a unique religious site that is an amalgamation of Hindu and Buddhist religions. The colourful prayer flags and bells line the route to the main temple where a monk and a Hindu priest offer prayers to the Gods simultaneously. A place of harmonious coexistence, hundreds of devotees visit the temple on a daily basis.
